Referring Your Child For Special Education
Referring Your Child For Special Education
If you are concerned that your child may have a disability and needs accommodations or services in the school, as a parent, you have the right to make a referral for your child to have a full case study evaluation. You can follow these simple steps:
1. Write a letter including your child’s name, grade and teacher. State your concerns for your child, and indicate that you are requesting a special education evaluation. You may send this letter to your child’s teacher or the principal.
2. If you need assistance with making this request, please contact the building principal or teacher directly and verbally tell them that you are requesting an evaluation for special education services.
3. After special education staff receive this referral, they will have 14 school days to respond to your request and either conduct the evaluation, or tell you why they don’t think it’s appropriate. You will receive a booklet with your parent right, or procedural safeguards at this time.

When they turn three, the school district coordinates with EI to determine appropriate services and to transition children to Pre-K, Early Childhood, or bring in services. The earlier children receive intervention, the more likely they are to overcome challenges. Some areas to pay attention to are: Cognition (thinking and reasoning skills), speech and language, fine motor (small muscle movement), gross motor (large muscle movement), social skills, and self-help skills.
